About

Jess Evans (b.1996, UK. Lives and works in London)

Her practice combines figurative and abstract oil pastel studies, surrealist digital illustration and mosaic wall hangings. The main objective of her work is to abstract the human body.

Life drawing is central to her practice, and she approaches it unconventionally by accentuating lumps and bumps, elbows, and knees to emphasise the shapes and imperfections of the body. Predominantly working in oil pastels, her drawing technique uses continuous line, colour blocking, and minimal tone shading to create disproportional figures. The independent spirit of her vibrant drawings deploys the need for accuracy in favour of unapologetic characterisation. She was inspired to start a series of life drawing classes called ‘Get a Life Drawing’.

Working as a Curator for Art Gazette since 2020, she has helped build an international collection of over 13,000 original artworks. She curates regular exhibitions and provides art advisory to Interior Designers worldwide. In 2019, she curated ‘Murmurations’ a postgraduate art show for 60 emerging artists, working across the mediums of painting, drawing, photography, print, textiles, sculpture, film, dance, and music.

She graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins in 2019 and spent a semester at PRATT Institute in New York in 2017.
